Democracy Now! coverage of the Haiti earthquake: News and related interviews

January 16, 2010

If you are not familiar with Democracy Now! this would be a good time to have a look – or a listen. This daily, hour-long program is available online from their website, and is also podcast in audio and video formats (search for Democracy Now! in iTunes or other aggregators). Amy Goodman is one of the best interviewers working today, and Democracy Now! is a show that is well worth following, especially if you are interested in getting close to the story and appreciate good research and long interviews. I’ve embedded the opening of the 14 January 2010 show. The headlines below the video link to two clips from the 15 January 2010 program. Randall Robinson and Naomi Klein offer two points worth considering. Robinson urges the media to tell the real story of the history of Haiti. You can find his website here. Information about Naomi Klein’s latest book, The Shock Doctrine, can be found here. We can gain a better understanding of the unfolding disaster in Haiti if we learn more about the sordid history of American and French intervention since this Latin American country declared independence in 1804. We can predict how corporate interests will try to take advantage of this latest disaster by reviewing  how New Orleans was transformed after it was struck by Hurricane Katrina.

In case you haven’t yet heard, I thought you might be interested in the following

We are coordinating a nationwide tour by Hordur Torfason – an Icelandic activist who initiated the recent ‘cutlery revolution’ in that country: This resulted in:

    1. Resignation of the whole government.
    2. Nationalization of the bank.
    3. Referendum so that the people can make economic decisions.
    4. Incarcerating the responsible parties.
    5. Rewriting of the constitution by its people via Twitter and Facebook etc

All of this was accomplished Peacefully.

Interestingly the Icelandic economy is now doing well and the IMF and other heavyweight economists agree that Iceland did the right thing

Hordur Torfason is currently lecturing on meta modern democracy in Europe. The time is right for New Zealanders to hear what he has to say.

He will be visiting here in March 2013 and we are raising funds for this in the most democratic way – through People give their credit card details and only if we reach our target, the funds are deducted. This way, all New Zealanders can see this inspiring man talk for free. Dates currently confirmed include Auckland – March 18th & 19th, Wellington 20th & 21st, Nelson 24th followed by Christchurch 25th and 26th and Dunedin 27th and 28th. Please help us spread the word.

Further information can be found at

    Many thanks.
    Kind regards,
    Sian Clement
